About The Event

Learning Funny.

Learning Funny is an introduction to stand-up comedy, perfect for people who have always fancied themselves as comedians or parolee who would just love to give it a go. The course will be taught over the three Sunday's during May and will include the opportunity to perform live in a showcase at The Comedy Lounge. The course will be taught by two multi award wining comedians Jim Bayes & Jed Salisbury with a combined 15 years experience working the comedy circuit, gigging with some of the biggest names in the industry.

The course will run 11AM-5PM on the 5th, 12th May and 6-10PM on the 19th May. The course Fee will be £90 for all 3 dates with a performance on the evening on the 19th May.

Introduction to comedy

What you should know before you start,

When and how to research,

What is a stand up set,

Is stand up for you? could it be a full time job/career.

How to write and when to write

Why Writing is important, what is funny and what has been done a million times before. When is something funny only in conversation and when it can becomes material.

Comedy styles and status

Listen to pro acts and see how their style works for them, try a joke from one act in the style of another.

What is a status, what is your status and why it's important.

Finding the joke

What is a punchline and how can we get more from your idea. When can we take a good joke and make it great.

Keeping it simple,

Avoiding the obvious,

Why we don't joke share,

Tags, call backs and Rule of 3

Creating a set

Take your writing, jokes and now build a 5 min set, how to place things and how to remember it all.

When you run out of time how to handle this.

What does the audience see? What do promoters see?

Where to look, how to handle the dreaded heckle, mic technique, how to come over confident (even if the act is nervous)
